From Bones to Bags: My Crafting Journey

Meet Emma Easter: From Forensic Anthropology to Handcrafted Bags

Hello! I thought it was about time I properly introduced myself. I'm Emma, the maker behind Emma Easter Handcrafted, and my journey to becoming a bag maker might surprise you.

My Journey to Craftsmanship

Before I spent my days in my solar-powered studio crafting luxury bags, I actually studied Forensic Anthropology and worked various roles, from being an In Work Mentor at a charity supporting people with health issues and disabilities, to working at a veterinary practice as both an auxiliary nurse and branch manager. I even trained and ran my own dog grooming business until Covid changed everything. It was during lockdown that I discovered my passion for sewing, starting with children's clothing before finding my true calling in handcrafted bags. Quite the journey, right? But looking back, it makes perfect sense that the same attention to detail and precision now goes into every bag I create.

Crafting in the Rhondda Valleys

Handcrafted leather and Harris Tweed bag being sewn on industrial machine - artisan bag making process in Wales

Here in the Rhondda Valleys of South Wales, I've built something rather special. Each bag that leaves my studio tells a story, not just mine, but a story of British craftsmanship, ethical production, and a commitment to doing things properly. I work with premium materials from trusted British suppliers of Harris Tweed, Marchant & Mills, and other specialist UK manufacturers, combining water-resistant linings with either responsibly sourced leather or vegan-friendly materials like organic cotton oilskin.

Transparency and Ethics

What matters most to me is transparency. That's why I'm always open about my process - from paying myself the Real Living Wage* to creating in small batches of just 1-2 bags per design at a time. This ensures each piece receives the attention it deserves, and every bag is truly unique. Each creation is handmade by me using my trusty sewing machine, designed with both individuality and practicality in mind.

Commitment to Slow Fashion

As part of the slow fashion movement, I believe in creating bags that are meant to be cherished and last. Every piece is environmentally conscious, avoiding mass production in favour of thoughtful, small-batch creation. This approach allows me to ensure each bag meets my high standards for both durability and style.
